The Faculty of Language Studies (FLS) was founded in 2002, coinciding with the establishment of the Arab Open University (AOU). Currently, it offers a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in English Language and Literature (ELL) across all AOU campuses. This programme is structured around core courses developed in collaboration with the Open University UK, utilizing textbooks, supplementary materials, and methodologies that meet the highest international standards. The demand for this distinguished programme continues to rise, as it not only fosters intellectual and academic development but also aligns with the career aspirations of students.

The AOU learning/teaching strategy provides contact hours that are equal to 25% of what traditional universities require. Thus, AOU students enjoy the benefits of both the open and traditional university systems.
The BA programme will be delivered through two complementary modes:
- Face-to-face interactive tutorials, constituting 25% of course credit hours.
- . Interactive distance learning delivered through specially designed teaching and support materials that are conducive for self-learning, constituting 75% of course credit hours.
Knowledge and understanding skills are acquired through blended learning materials including specially written course material, study guides, readers, and audio-visuals.
English Language Unit (ELU)
To further improve students' English proficiency in the aforementioned programmes, the Faculty of Language Studies (FLS) houses the English Language Unit (ELU), which is primarily responsible for the Orientation and Foundation programmes. These programmes, typically undertaken by students in their first year, are designed to address students' specific challenges in English while also enhancing their communication skills. The goal is to equip students with the necessary language skills to succeed in their studies at AOU and to prepare them for future employment. The ELU also oversees the implementation of the English Placement Test (EPT) and organizes various activities to support English language learning.
